What is Chiropody?
Chiropody generally refers to the more routine assessments and treatments relating to the feet. These include toe-nail cutting, the removal of corns and callus debridement.
The Chiropodist at TherapyWise can treat and help you manage the following conditions:

Cracked heels are also known as fissures and can result in an area of excessive hard skin build up. If left untreated, these cracks can become deep and actually bleed and cause pain. They may even become infected.
Treatment: Your Chiropdist can reduce the hard skin painlessly and advise an emollient to use and also give footwear advice to prevent them recurring.
This is simply ‘hard skin’ and can be found anywhere that is subject to friction. There are also other causes for example Psoriasis. Callus formation is not always problematic but can cause a burning sensation and be generally uncomfortable.
Treatment: Your chiropodist can reduce the callus using a scalpel, giving instant relief and can also advise you on preventative measures.
Onychomycosis is the name given to nails infected by fungus. This often makes the nails thickened and discoloured. It can also be very uncomfortable in footwear due to pressure. It is good to seek advice from your Chiropodist in these cases as there are other causes of thickened nails, for example trauma.
Treatment: The thickened nails can be reduced painlessly in clinic using a special tool and this generally gives immediate relief from any discomfort and also improves their appearance.
This occurs when the nail actually pierces the skin causing bleeding, an inflamed appearance and tenderness. There may also be a discharge from the area.
Treatment: If infection is present your Chiropodist may refer you to your GP who may prescribe antibiotics. However, this will probably not cure the problem. You will likely need a small piece of nail removed and this is generally performed without the need for anaesthetic. Relief tends to be instant. The Chiropodist at TherapyWise has developed a unique treatment in these cases which causes the least amount of discomfort to the patient.
These are small areas of very hard skin that can form anywhere on the foot subject to pressure. ‘Soft’ corns can also develop between the toes.
Treatment: They can be very painful but are quite easy to treat and the patient often obtains immediate relief after treatment. Your Chiropodist can then look at why the corn developed in the 1st place and give advice on reducing the chance of recurrence.
These are caused by a virus and can be very difficult to treat. They are often confused with corns. Generally most disappear on their own without the need for any treatment, although some can last for years.
Treatment: There are many treatments available, for example Cryotherapy or freezing and application of an acid, but none are 100% effective. Your Chiropodist will advise you on the best management for your particular presentation.
This is a condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body does not produce any or not enough insulin or the insulin produced does not work properly. If not controlled this can cause many problems in the feet for example reduced sensation, tendon and ligament injuries and ulcer formation. It is important that you have a regular check-up with your Chiropodist every 6-12 months. Sensation in the feet and pulses will be checked and any areas of the feet which the Chiropodist feels are vulnerable will be addressed immediately.
